With such a big variety of leathers, we understand how confusing it can be to distinguish between different types. Especially if we talk about suede and nubuck. Can’t deny, at first glance they seem almost identical.

Let’s start from the obvious. Although both materials come from the sanding of animal skin, suede is obtained by polishing the inner side of the skin, while nubuck — from the sanding of its outer side. That’s why nubuck is smoother and more durable while suede is softer and more flexible.

At Cala Jade we stick to cow leather as it is stronger and more resistant to wear compared to other leathers like lamb or goat. There are no strict pros and cons between them, as each material is beautiful in its own way. However, keep in mind some key differences when buying suede or nubuck items.

SUEDE

If we could describe suede in just three words, we would pick supple, malleable, and delicate.

To create a plush, fuzzy surface with a soft touch for suede, the leather is sanded with fine abrasives to raise the fibers, bringing its velvety texture.

The delicate nature of the suede is both a blessing and a curse. Due to its softness, suede is less durable than nubuck and highly susceptible to scuffs and damage. It is not waterproof either so water and other liquids typically discolor suede and make it very sensitive to stains.

Beside that, suede has the tendency to stretch over time, which may affect the structure of the bag.

We advise wearing suede in dry weather to minimize the effects of rain and snow.  On the bright side suede is more affordable compared to nubuck.

NUBUCK

Both suede and nubuck are made of high-quality leather, but unlike suede, nubuck are thicker and more durable. It feels more firm and structured, while suede is softer and has a more rustic finish.

Accessories from nubuck are more waterproof and resistant to liquids than suede but still quite prone to stains and scuffs. Nubuck absorbs oils, which can darken certain areas over time.

At the same time, nubuck requires more careful maintenance and cleaning. It's more prone to stains but easier to clean in comparison to suede. With that being said, nubuck is typically more expensive than suede owing to its higher quality processing.
